On December 5, 2025, President Xi Jinping had amicable exchanges with French President Emmanuel Macron at Dujiangyan, Chengdu City of Sichuan Province.Dujiangyan in early winter is embraced by lush mountains. Upon arrival, President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Madame Brigitte Macron were warmly received by President Xi Jinping and Madame Peng Liyuan. President Xi welcomed President Macron to Sichuan, the Land of Abundance. Recalling his visit to President Macron's hometown in the Hautes-Pyrénées at the latter's invitation last year, President Xi expressed his confidence that President Macron's visit this time will further enrich his understanding of China. The two heads of state and their wives strolled and conversed as they walked along the Yangong Path.?President Xi Jinping explained the history and significance of Dujiangyan, noting that as the only ancient irrigation system still in use in the world today, Dujiangyan represents one of the earliest success stories of harmony between humanity and nature. Its construction process fully reflects the resilience, fortitude and pioneering spirit of the Chinese nation. On each of my visits to Dujiangyan, I have been able to feel the ancestors' greatness in adapting to local conditions, following the law of nature, pursuing harmony between humanity and nature, and harnessing water for the benefit of the people, and to draw inspiration from their wisdom for state governance. The French nation is also known for its perseverance. China and France should be better able to understand and respect each other than other countries.?President Macron expressed his appreciation of the beautiful mountains and clear waters of Dujiangyan. The irrigation system built over two thousand years ago that is still functional today is a testament to the diligence and wisdom of the Chinese people. Both France and China have time-honored histories and cultures, and the two peoples share the same aspirations for a better life. Working together, France and China can pursue shared development and prosperity and deliver benefit to the Chinese and French people. At the Huaigu Pavilion, the two heads of state and their wives sat down for tea by the water and engaged in a discussion of world affairs.?President Xi Jinping underscored that the prosperity of a nation and the rejuvenation of a people require not only material progress but also intellectual-cultural advancement. Only a nation confident in its culture can establish itself, stand firm, and go far. Chinese civilization is the world's only uninterrupted great civilization that continues to this day in a state form, and is uniquely characterized by its continuity, creativity, unity, inclusiveness, and peacefulness. China and France are stellar examples of Eastern and Western civilizations. Their shared spirit of independence is deeply rooted in the respective rich cultural heritages. The establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France was both a "handshake" between two independent countries and a convergence of two brilliant civilizations. Facing a fluid and turbulent world, I am confident that as two countries with profound history and culture, China and France will, through dialogue and cooperation, jointly make greater contributions to world peace, stability, and human development and progress.President Macron noted that the current international landscape is evolving rapidly and is full of uncertainties. In the first 10 months, bilateral trade reached US$68.75 billion and cumulative two-way investment has exceeded US$27 billion. The two sides should renew the original aspiration for establishing diplomatic relations, seize opportunities to deepen cooperation, and work for the steady and sustained growth of bilateral relations. Together, the two countries will jointly open up a more splendid chapter in cooperation and address the uncertainty in today’s world with the stability of China-France relations.First, the two countries should continue to expand new areas for bilateral economic and trade cooperation. China views France as its important and indispensable economic and trade partner. China welcomes France to actively participate in Chinese modernization and will support Chinese companies that have the capacity and willingness in investing and doing business in France. The two sides should further unleash the potential of cooperation in emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, green and digital economy, biomedicine and silver economy, keep advancing openness and cooperation on industrial and supply chains, and foster a fair, transparent, nondiscriminatory and predictable business environment for companies of the two countries.Second, the two countries should continue to pursue new progress in mutually beneficial cooperation between China and the EU. Interdependence is not a risk, and convergent interests are not a threat. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War and the founding of the United Nations. The two sides will strengthen strategic communication and collaboration to uphold the U.N.-centered international system and the international order underpinned by international law, and work for a more just and equitable global governance system.President Xi noted that the world today is far from tranquil, as complicated international political disputes and conflicts continue to erupt across multiple regions. On the Ukraine crisis, China supports all efforts conducive to peace, and hopes that parties can reach, through dialogue and negotiation, a fair, lasting and binding peace agreement that is accepted by all parties concerned. China will continue to play a constructive role in the political settlement of the crisis. At the same time, China firmly opposes any irresponsible attempt to shift blame or smear others. President Xi Jinping Holds Talks with French President Emmanuel Macron
On the morning of December 4, 2025, President Xi Jinping held talks at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing with French President Emmanuel Macron, who is on a state visit to China.President Xi Jinping pointed out that China and France are independent, visionary and responsible major countries and constructive forces working to foster a multipolar world and promote solidarity and cooperation among humanity. Today, transformations unseen in a century unfold at a faster pace. Humanity has once again come to a crossroads. China and France should act with a strong sense of responsibility, uphold multilateralism, and stand firmly on the right side of history. China is ready to work with France, bearing in mind the fundamental interests of the Chinese and French people and the long-term interests of the international community, to uphold equal dialogue, openness and cooperation, and strive for further steady progress in China-France comprehensive strategic partnership in the new 60-year cycle, to fully demonstrate the strategic value of this partnership and make new contributions toward promoting an equal and orderly multipolar world as well as universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.President Xi Jinping underscored that no matter how the external environment may evolve, China and France should always demonstrate the strategic vision and independence of a major country, offer each other understanding and support on issues concerning core interests and major concerns, and safeguard the political foundation of China-France relations. At its fourth plenary session, the 20th CPC Central Committee deliberated over and adopted the recommendations for the 15th Five-Year Plan, drawing up the blueprint for China’s development in the coming five years and also offering a list of opportunities to the world. China and France should seize the opportunities to expand the space for cooperation, strengthen cooperation in such traditional areas as aviation, aerospace, and nuclear energy, and unlock the cooperation potential in green economy, digital economy, biomedicine, AI, new energy and other fields. China is ready to import more quality products from France, and welcomes more French companies to operate in China. China also hopes France will provide a level-playing field and stable expectations for Chinese enterprises. The people of China and France have a natural affinity for each other. The two countries should deepen exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, science and technology as well as at subnational levels, and write more exciting chapters of people-to-people and cultural exchanges.President Xi Jinping stressed that the world today is far from tranquil, with complex, intractable hotspot issues flaring up in many places. As founding members of the United Nations and permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, China and France should practice true multilateralism, uphold the U.N.-centered international system and the international order underpinned by international law, increase communication and coordination on the political settlement of disputes and the promotion of world peace and stability, and jointly advance the reform and improvement of global governance. The world now faces many imbalances, such as uneven development between the North and the South and inadequate representation of developing countries in international financial institutions. Countries should shoulder responsibilities together, coordinate actions, and work together to make global economic governance fairer, more just and equitable. The exchanges and cooperation between China and Europe over the past 50 years have been mutually beneficial and have contributed to each other’s success. The industrial and supply chains of countries are deeply interconnected. Openness and cooperation will bring opportunities for development, while decoupling and severing supply chains will lead to isolation. Protectionism cannot solve the problems caused by global industrial restructuring, but will only worsen the international environment for trade. China and Europe should stay committed to partnership, pursue cooperation with an open mind, and ensure that China-Europe relations develop along the right track of independence and mutually beneficial cooperation.President Macron noted that China and France have maintained close high-level exchanges, and have always trusted and respected each other. France values its relations with China. It firmly upholds the one-China policy and is willing to continue deepening the France-China comprehensive strategic partnership. France is pleased to see the dynamism of the Chinese economy that promotes openness and cooperation and has brought more opportunities to the world. France is ready to work with China to promote mutual investment, strengthen cooperation in such areas as economy, trade and renewable energy, and deepen friendly cultural exchanges. France welcomes more Chinese investment in France and will provide a fair and non-discriminatory business environment. France is committed to promoting the sound and steady development of Europe-China relations. It believes that Europe and China should uphold dialogue and cooperation, and Europe should achieve strategic autonomy. Given the global geopolitical instability and challenges to the multilateral order, cooperation between France and China is even more important and indispensable. France fully agrees with President Xi Jinping’s views on reforming and improving global governance and promoting a more balanced global economy. It stands ready to work with China to strengthen coordination, jointly shoulder the due responsibilities of major countries, uphold multilateralism, and enhance cooperation in areas such as climate response, biodiversity conservation, and AI governance, so as to contribute to world peace and prosperity. The two heads of state exchanged views on the Ukraine crisis. President Xi Jinping stated that China supports all efforts that are conducive to peace and will continue to play a constructive role in the political settlement of the crisis in its own way. China supports European countries in playing their due role toward the establishment of a balanced, effective and sustainable European security architecture.?After the talks, the two heads of state jointly witnessed the signing of multiple cooperation documents in nuclear energy, agri-food, education, and ecological environment, among others. The two heads of state also jointly met the Chinese and foreign press.?Prior to the talks, President Xi Jinping and his wife, Madame Peng Liyuan, held a welcoming ceremony for President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Madame Brigitte Macron, in the Northern Hall of the Great Hall of the People. As President Macron arrived, a guard of honor lined up in salutation.
